Indian railways have always been lenient with passengers carrying as much luggage as they want. We all have heard the patent, "Arey, seat ke neeche rakh denge. Bhai sahab, thoda aapka suitcase udhar karenge?"
But things will change now. Indian Railways has announced extra charges and penalty will be charged on excess baggage, though at a lower rate.
Here is what you need to know:
The baggage has to be booked in advance.
Though at a low rate, the railway will be charging just like what happens in airlines. If any passenger is held travelling without paying fees for the excess baggage, a penalty will be charged. The amount of which will be six times the fee.
Rules will be applied from the first week of June across all zones.
As far as we have witnessed at the airports, unlike it, in trains not every passenger's bag will be checked. The check will be done on a random basis, and besides the weight, heavy pieces of baggage will also be reviewed.
Every compartment is given its individual weight limit.
NDTV reported that a passenger carrying 70 kg of free luggage and maximum 150 kg in the first-class air-conditioned compartment is allowed.
For an AC two-tier passenger, 50 kg of luggage is available till the maximum weight of 100 kg.
For sleeper class and a second class passengers, 40 kg and 35 kg of luggage are the limits while maximum baggage allowed is 80 kg and 70 kg.
Railways is going to take this rule strictly.
According to PTI, Ved Prakash, a senior official of the Railway Board's Information department stated: "The rules were already in place, we are just enforcing them strictly now."
