Unless one is new to this country, they’ll know that a certain chunk of India is vehemently against the idea of consensual relationships before marriage. We literally have gangs/groups/organisations who go out on Valentine’s Day to irritate couples. And this hugely regressive environment has caused people to not get into relationships or never acknowledge them publicly. However, one boy from Rajasthan has challenged this status quo with one simple and subtle line.
The final results for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exam were announced yesterday. And it was Kanishak Kataria from IIT-Bombay who came out on top.
Kanishak Kataria, AIR 1 in #UPSC final exam: It's a very surprising moment. I never expected to get the 1st rank. I thank my parents, sister & my girlfriend for the help & moral support. People will expect me to be a good administrator & that's exactly my intention. #Rajasthan pic.twitter.com/IBwhW8TJUs— ANI (@ANI) April 5, 2019

Kataria belongs to the Scheduled Caste category and he topped the exam with Maths as his optional subject. He did his B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering and worked with Samsung in Korea. However, he came back home to prepare for civil services.
Heartiest congratulations to #Rajasthan's Kanishak Kataria who has topped the #UPSC civil services examination and Akshat Jain who has secured second position. It's a great achievement and a chance to give your best to society.#UPSCResults— Ashok Gehlot (@ashokgehlot51) April 5, 2019
While his All-India-Rank was incredible, netizens were fixated over one thing and that was his courage to mention his girlfriend’s contribution in front of the nation.
I absolutely love that he said girlfriend.— Life-given Liz lemons (@GuptRogue) April 5, 2019
So many years of subtle conditioning shattered in a small little statement.
'Achhe bache yeh sab nahi karte' et. all. https://t.co/o3eNKV0b4r

Finally an Indian son is daring to use the word "girlfriend" confidently in front of his father.— Subhajit (@subhajitm) April 5, 2019
Because no comparison with Sharmaji Ka beta, he is already #1. https://t.co/C9YcAKibjI

IAS 1st Ranker has a girlfriend&he openly thanks her for his success. This is a major cultural shock for a small town Indian who idolizes IAS officers. India is transforming culturally. Tina Dabi, previous topper went for inter faith marriage. Now this. Conservatives're losing! https://t.co/43acSCUOXW— Anshul Trivedi (@anshultrivedi47) April 5, 2019

This notion of balancing everything in life and achieving one’s dreams isn’t just limited to boys. It’s applicable to everyone in any kind of consensual relationship. But most importantly, Kataria’s example of how a healthy relationship can only motivate people to do wonders should be noted by conservative Indian parents.
