Imagine you being so passionate about something, only to find out there's some stringent rule which hinders your personal space. What would you do in such a situation? You would probably wonder what's the big deal. Well, it is...
Cause something similar happened with a sportsperson recently. And it is not the first time either. We all know how stringent the Middle East is about its rules for women. Iran, being a Muslim country, enforces Islamic law where dress codes are strictly enforced. That includes covering head with a headscarf (hijab) and wearing floor-length dresses as well.
One must understand that such rules, though normal for its residents, might be a little too strict for others. Strict compliance of such rules might be a bit tough for players who are already working so hard towards their goals. And that is why Indian grandmaster Soumya Swaminathan decided to not participate in the tournament altogether.
Let's talk about it...
Soumya Swaminathan
Indian Grandmaster Soumya has withdrawn from the Asian Team Championship. Reason? It will be held in Iran and they have a hijabpolicy. Meaning, the players cannot participate in the game unless they comply with the rules of wearing a headscarf. She considered the compulsion to be a direct violation of her basic human rights.
"I understand the organisers expecting us to wear our national team dress or formals or sporting attire for our games during official championships, but surely there is no place for an enforceable religious dress code in sports," she told the media.
Happened with Heena Sidhu as well...
Soumya is not the first one to face this predicament. In 2016, Indian pistol shooter Heena Sidhu pulled out of the Asian Airgun Shooting Championship in Iran because of compulsory hijab rule for all women athletes.
Former world number one Heena Sidhu said that forcing athletes to wear a hijab is against the spirit of a sport.
