7 Reasons Why Smoking is Considered Casual

It looks cool!

Smoking - another sensitive issue in India.
We are in general very sensitive to things, and most of the time about wrong things. It's alright though, we've thrived as an independent nation for over 70 years and have survived. We've seen a lot worse and we'll probably survive this too.
So what if around 11% of world smokers reside in India? We have almost 17% of world's population, it is obvious.
So what if 1 million people die in India each year because of smoking?
So what if 600,000 people are dying of passive smoking all over the world? So what, really?
Clearly, the danger of death is not strong enough to scare us out of our wits. Then what really gets us going? Let's take a look...

Look cool

That is how it starts, mostly. When we take it as a fashion statement and as a matter of pride...
survey states that around 87% teenagers said watching actors smoke promotes smoking.

Addiction

This is one of the obvious ones. "Once I've started, it is really hard to give it all up," every smoker's favourite statement.
As many as 70% of tobacco users have wanted to quit the habit but only 3-5% were able to succeed.

Social smoking

If I'm smoking occasionally, once in a while, it is really fine. That one kick is all I need."

Is it really, though? Casual smoking is on the rise and it is not as casual as it might seem.

Ignorance

We all know it's harmful, but yet we choose to ignore the extent of damage it can do. Smoking can end up causing lung cancer, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and heart diseases. But you already know that!

No strict rules against it

'No Smoking' initiative is trending. But still, there are no particular harsh rules against it. You cannot smoke in public places but then, what about the fact that 90% teenagers admitted that they won't stop smoking if there's no resistance from their parents?

Peer pressure

"What? You don't smoke? Uhh... You're missing out, dude!"
Another study that had over 2,000 female participants, said that majority of women blamed peer pressure for their smoking habit.

Stress

In times of stress, smoking gives that escape. It is momentary but appealing.
No, I'm not just saying that for the sake of it. A survey states 50% of teenagers smoked because they believed it helped them reduce stress and even increase concentration.

Over 30,000 people say...

Addiction and ignorance are the biggest reasons for smoking in India, according to India Ka Pulse. Some 19% say smoking is taken casually because people think of it as a fashion statement. Others believe it is because of our population and lack of strict government rules against smoking. A small percent claimed it helped release stress.
That is all for now. Hope you liked the story. Don't forget to share the story if you like.
