In
today’s time if we talk about statues, then what comes in the mind is
the sky touching statues of yesteryear’s politicians, freedom fighters
or gods. But there is one statue in Hyderabad which is breaking this
chain. It will probably not visited by many for its height or the worth
and media will not cover its round the clock construction.
This statue is of the upright civil servant S R Sankaran,
whose service and dutiful nature earned him the title of ‘people’s IAS
officer’. He was a 1956 batch IAS officer. Officers like him work day
and night for people’s help and Sankaran devoted his life for the same.
R. Sankaran was not only an Indian civil servant but a social worker and the Chief Secretary of the State of Tripura. He was known for his contributions for the enforcement of Abolition of Bonded Labour Act of 1976 which abolished bonded labour in India.
SR Sankaran’s tireless efforts towards the upliftment of the poor and downtrodden throughout his career made him a fine example, not just for civil servants and aspirants but also citizens.
He was one of the seven civil servants who was abducted by Maoists in 1987.
He was the chief negotiator of the state government in the negotiations of 2004 to end Naxalite violence in Andhra Pradesh.
He was a mentor to the Safai Karmachari Andolan, a social initiative propagated by Bezwada Wilson to eradicate manual scavenging in India. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honor, Padma Bhushan, in 2005, for his contributions to society, but he declined the honor.
His social welfare activities made him famous among people. And this has led to the construction of the statue in his honor. Don’t we need more of such personalities who deserve this respect? What do you think?
